The New Structure of the NCCP

A Period of Transition

The new structure of the NCCP began to take shape in 2004. Until all components of the new structure are complete, there will be the opportunities to receive training and achieve certification in the existing five-level program or the new competency-based program. This will depend on the progress each sport makes in the transition to the new approach and structure. A number of National Sport Federations and provinces/territories are already offering workshops and other learning opportunities using the competency-based approach.  Squash is currently offering the Coaching Foundations course in place of the old Level 1 course.

A Competency-Based Approach

Following an extensive evaluation of the effectiveness of the NCCP, the NCCC approved the transition from the existing knowledge and the course-based program with five consecutive levels of certification to a competency-based education and training (CBET) approach, in which coaches are trained and may achieve certification of competency to coach in a specific coaching environment. The transition to this new approach is ongoing, as each sport participating in the NCCP revises its coach training and certification.

The New Structure of the NCCP

Training and certification will be based on coaching steams and contexts that reflect the ifferent types of coaches in the Canadian sport system:

Streams

Community Sport

Competitive Sport

Skill Instruction

Contexts:

Initiation to sport

Introduction to competition

For beginners

Ongoing Participation

Developmental Competition

For intermediate

High Performance

For Advanced Performers

Within this new system, a coach is now described as:

In Training – when a coach has completed some of the required training for a context;
Trained – when a coach has completed all required training for a context;
Certified – when a coach has completed all evaluation requirements for a context
