Congratulations to Jennifer Pelletier, Hollie Naughton, Michelle Gemmell, Jillian Baker, Tyler Osborne, Michael McCue, Joshua Sekhar and Cameron Seth - these 8 young athletes will represent Ontario at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, beging hosted in Nova Scotia in February.

2009-2010 Canada Winter Games Squad
Congratulations to the following young athletes who have been selected to the 2009 -2010 Canada Winter Games Squad:

The Squad is comprised of 12 young athletes (6 boys and 6 girls). Next year at this time, we will be selecting the Canada Games Team of 8 athletes (4 boys and 4 girls) to represent Ontario at the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
The Canada Games are a very, very important component of Squash Ontario’s junior high performance athlete development. In 2007 Team Ontario won two gold medals – that is our goal for 2011.

SQUASH ONTARIO CANADA GAMES PROGRAM
All junior competitive squash activities fall under the umbrella of the Canada Games program. The Canada Games program is the pinnacle of competitive squash in Ontario and as a result, the athlete development model is structured in such a way as to identify athletes at young ages and provide them with training, coaching and competitive opportunities to help them reach their goals.
The over-arching program is 4 years, culminating in the Canada Winter Games which are held every four years.
There are several components to the annual program:
- Team Ontario - first 2 years of the program
- Canada Games Squad - 3rd year of the program
- Canada Games Team - 4th year of the program
- High Performance coaching for Teams and Squads (mandatory for funding)

PART 1 CANADA GAMES PROGRAM – FINAL SELECTION IS BASED ON MEETING YEAR THREE (3) PARTICIPATION CRITERIA.
Athletes will be selected to the Canada Winter Games Team on or before June 30th.

Top 2 boys eligible for the under 19 positions for the 2011 Canada Winter Games as per season end rankings.Top 2 boys eligible for the under 17 positions for the 2011 Canada Winter Games as per season end rankings.

Team Program – How to Make the Team!
Athletes will be required to participate in all components of the program, including designated events.
Injury/Illness
In the event that an athlete has submitted a medical certificate, Squash Ontario reserves the right to request an independent medical assessment. Additionally,
medical confirmation that the player is fit for tournament play prior to confirmation of Canada Games, may be sought.
- If an athlete has been invited to be part of the 2009-2010 Canada Winter Games Squad and declines the position or if an athlete on the 2009-2010 Canada Games Squad fails to meet all selection criteria, he/she will be ineligible to be selected to the team even if he/she has met all other eligibility criteria.
Athlete Requirements to remain on Canada Games Team
- Attend all training camps
- Attend one team building outing
- Must keep competitively active or risk being dropped from the team. It is expected that all athletes will participate in a minimum of 4 events between September 30th and March 1st
Program
- All athletes must compete in 2 Gold events, the Ontario Junior Closed Championships and the Canadian Junior Open Championships, all of which are held between 1 September and 1 March
- Where travel or school obligations prevent compliance with (1), the athlete must apply in writing for a written exemption. The written exemption must be received in the Squash Ontario office no later than 30 days prior to the event for which the exemption is being requested.
Funding Assistance
Each athlete is eligible to receive up to $1,000.00 in funding based on participation in the following events:
Gold # 1 $45.00
Gold # 2 $45.00
Ontario Junior Closed $50.00
Canadian Junior Open $250.00
U.S. Junior Open $350.00
Jesters $350.00
British/Scottish Junior Open $350.00

NOTE: Squash Ontario reserves the right to add an athlete(s) to the Squad in either gender or age group if the number of total eligible squad athletes (12) is not met. The athlete(s) who would be added to the squad will have had to meet the same eligibility and selection criteria as stated above.

Depending upon successful fund raising initiatives, Squash Ontario will endeavour to provide:
- No cost to attend two Canada Games Squad training camps a year
- Some financial assistance to help cover costs for Canada Games Squad athletes for travel and tournament entry fees
Athlete Commitments
To be eligible for ½ half season funding, you must attend the December training camp. To be eligible for 2nd half season funding, you must attend the March 2010 training camp.
Removal
An athlete may be removed from the Canada Games Squad if at the end of the first half of the season, he or she has not attended at least 1 Gold event and the Ontario Junior Closed Championships.
Selection for Canada Games Team
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO MAKE THE CANADA GAMES TEAM?
1. Participate in 3 of 4 Gold Events in 2009 – 2010
2. Participate in the 2009 Ontario Junior Closed and the 2010 Ontario Junior Open
3. In addition to the above events, head to head results in the following events will be used:
* 4 2009 – 2010 Gold events, 2009 Ontario Junior Closed, 2010 Ontario Junior Open, 2009 Junior Canadian Junior Open, 2010 Canadian Junior Closed and 2009 Western junior Core Event
4. Team members will be selected based on rankings and conclusive head to head results during the 2009-2010 season. The rankings will be as at 30 April 2010.

PART II COACHING CANADA GAMES SQUAD AND TEAM
Selection Criteria for Canada Games Squad/Team Coaches (one male, one female)
The term of employment will be from date of hire, August 2009 through to 31 March 2011 with an annual review in June 2010.
- Must be either fully certified level 3 or have attained partial level 3 with a commitment to complete full certification by December 2010.Must have extensive experience in coaching junior high performance athletes
- Must have extensive experience in coaching in a team environment
- Must currently be running an active junior program
Selection Process for Canada Games Squad/Team Coaches
- Job description and terms of reference will be drafted by the Junior Advisory Committee
- Job description and terms of reference will be circulated all level 5, 4, 3 and 2 coachesInterviews will be conducted by two members of the Junior Advisory Committee nd the Executive Director of Squash Ontario and appointments will be approved by the Board of Directors
- Police screening checks will be required prior to appointment
- Contract outlining Squash Ontario expectations and coaches’ commitments will be signed by both parties

Selection Process
Junior Development Squad will be selected no later than 1 July by the Junior Advisory Committee
Athlete Assistance
Depending upon successful fund raising initiatives, Squash Ontario will endeavour to provide:
- Some financial assistance to help cover training costs $50.00 end of December; $50.00 end of April.
- Significant subsidy toward two Junior Squad training camps a year
- Team Ontario shirt
Athlete Commitments
To be eligible for ½ half season funding, you must attend the December training camp. To be eligible for 2nd half season funding, you must attend the April training camp.
Removal
An athlete may be removed from the Junior Development Squad if at the end of the first half of the season, he or she has not attended at least 1 Gold event and the Ontario Junior Closed Championships.

Must be a minimum fully certified level 2 coach; preference will be given to level 3 coaches who apply
- Experience in coaching junior high performance athletes
- Experience coaching in a junior team environment
- One year contract
- Must currently be running an active junior program
Coaching Commitments for Team Ontario Coaches
- Hold 2 camps for Team Ontario
Selection Criteria for Junior Development Squad (one male, one female)
- Must be a minimum fully certified level 2 coach or working towards level 2 certification
- Experience in coaching junior high performance athletes
- Some experience in coaching in a junior team environment such as at the Ontario Winter Games
- One year contract
Selection Process
- Job descriptions to be drafted by Junior Advisory Committee
- Call for applications for both Team Ontario and Junior Development Squad will be posted on the website and sent electronically to all coaches who have the appropriate certification level
- Interviews conducted by two members of the Junior Advisory Committee and approved by Board of Directors
- Police screen checks will be required
- Annual contract will be required to be signed by coaches
