Power and Nicol
YMG Canadian Classic 2002 Final
  • Complete multi camera digital broadcast production of the Final available on video and DVD.
  • Fully edited but not commentated, multiple slow motions, sound effects, game statistics, etc.
  • Every point of this extraordinary Finals was recorded by Jean De Lierre in the usual close up manner but from a reverse angle i.e. from a front wall wide angle position rather than from the traditional rear wall.
  • Observing the facial expressions of the players throughout the rallies rather than the back of their heads is fascinating.
  • Watch Power hold his shot to draw his opponent forward then see the subtle flicks of his racquet send the ball to the back of the court Nicol in pursuit.
  • Watching these two masters at work from this front wall perspective offers a unique text book learning experience you will not want to miss if you play the game.

Unquestionably the best 2 players in the world throughout the late 90s and early 2000, Power and Nicol meet once again in one of their most extraordinary Final yet. Nicol was up one on Power in their head-to head career encounters, a win here would give him a 17-15 lead going into the upcoming World Open Championship in Antwerp, a tie would make it a dead even 16 a piece. Playing in front of his home crowd Power seemed invincible, well at least until the slip, the ankle twist and the roll... Drama in the making... was it real or an act? The referee's call for injury time off was questioned but held. Nicol, recovering himself from an ankle injury suffered the previous week, waited patiently. To everyone's surprise Power walked on court 45 minutes later as if nothing ever happened. Mind over matter surely, Nicol would have to do much of the same to block his own pain. The match resumed and so did the fiercest battle ever, De Lierre was there behind the one-eyed monster to capture every point and the drama you will not want to miss.

From the players' point of view, this YMG tournament was replacing 3 events that were cancelled following the World Trade Center disaster. Indeed, only this YMG event remained following the cancellation of the fall 2001 events i.e. the US Open, the Pakistan Open and the World Championships. The players came to North America well-rested and ready to fire up on all cylinders. This YMG event was their World Championship, and all dedicated their efforts to the memory of the victims of the 9-11 events.

Only the best 5 matches of the event were selected for your pleasure. All were selected for their excellence, the human drama displayed, and the fierce determination of the players who now dominate the squash scene, and of those who will replace them in the near future. In acquiring these extraordinary videos, you will not only see match highlights, but you will witness every point of every match through the magical lens of the one-eyed-monster controlled by De Lierre. The five cameras used by De Lierre on the production set, combined with the hundreds of hours he spent in the editing studio assembling all scenes, one frame at the time, will undoubtedly make this production the best of all time.

MATCHES AVAILABLE:

JONATHON POWER Vs PETER NICOL In their near 30 encounters to date, only a handful of matches between these two giants of the sport went the distance, and this was one of them. The YMG spectators witnessed one of the most incredible court battles ever, and De Lierre was there to capture every point of every game. Power kept his head .... well at least until the last point, and appeared to dominate attack after attack, Nicol ran and ran, and ran again for almost 1 hour and a half, and he finally got to match ball first in the fifth. Then, every spectator in BCE Place stopped breathing, and what followed next will not be forgotten by any who witnessed it....

JONATHON POWER Vs PAUL PRICE One of the most incredible matches in history. Price, the shot maker, nicked balls by the dozens, Power replied with holds, disguised drops and devastating lengths. The match was extremely physical and the court shook on more than one occasion. The referees had their hands full. The actors were great but, on that day, it is possible that one gave a better performance than the other..... Price made first to 14 with four match balls in the fifth. What happened next was in a way magical for one and nightmarish for the other.... An ultimate display of 'mind blowing' squash followed, the crowd went nuts, and BCE Place trembled....

DAVID PALMER Vs LEE BEACHILL Beachill is one of the most deceptive and technically accurate players on the tour today. Combined with this 'Power-style deception', he strikes the ball in a slicing motion from every court position, taking all pace off it. He baffled Palmer as he had Nicol earlier this year in the British Open quarters. No doubt that Palmer will be ready for this giant killer next time they meet. Beachill is going to the top, he knows it, and so do all other players on the tour. Watch him go!

PETER NICOL Vs ANTHONY RICKETTS Ricketts had no mercy for the qualifiers that were in his path. He also showed no respect for master Nicol. Ricketts is a solid player and extremely fit. He favors an attacking style and is most entertaining to watch. At the changing of the guards, as current top players advance in age, you will hear this name again soon and, without a doubt, it will be from the top of the rankings.

PETER NICOL Vs STEWART BOSWELL Boswell is one of fittest and steadiest player on the Pro tour at the moment, and he pushed Nicol to the limit. At some point in the future, Nicol will not be able to fend off the relentless attacks of this quiet giant. These two showed up to play squash that evening, and what squash it was. An hour and a half into the match, nothing was yet decided, and the underdog was breathing down the master's neck. Only the wet grey shirt on his back told the tale of his efforts, he moved like a cheetah from the first to the last point....

JONATHON POWER Vs DAVID PALMER Power came out to avenge his previous British Open loss to Palmer just months earlier. The match was fantastic, the referees had their hands full throughout as it was very physical. Thousands of spectators got worried that they would be buried alive under tons of glass pieces when an angry Palmer shoved Power against the side wall nearly causing the portable court to collapse
