Mustangs sweep 2010-11 OUA Squash banners
KINGSTON, Ont. (March 20, 2011) – The Western Mustangs captured both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2010-11 OUA Squash Championships Sunday afternoon at Queen’s Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC).
Western’s men’s victory marks the 28th consecutive season that the team has captured the OUA banner while the women won their fourth OUA championship in the last six years.
The Mustangs dominated the men’s competition from start to finish, winning all 24 of their matches while only dropping two games. No. 1 seed Kimesh Chetty of Hamilton, Ont., was particularly strong for the Mustangs, dominating each of his matches from start to finish to claim the Jack Fairs trophy as the Most Valuable Player. Head Coach Jack Fairs was announced as the co-winner of the Coach of the Year trophy following the championship, sharing the honour with McMaster’s Darryl White.
In the women’s competition, the Mustangs used a strong performance on Day 2 to overcome McMaster, Queen’s and Toronto. Western, who had just four victories after Day 1, got strong performances from No. 2 Holly Delavigne of Sarnia, Ont., No. 3 Giselle Delgado of Red Lake, Ont., and No. 4 Erin Grand of Toronto on Sunday. Each player picked up two victories to help the Mustangs regain the title they lost to Queen’s last season.
The host Queen’s Gaels earned the team silver medal in the men’s competition thanks to the play of OUA All-Stars Alex Ford of New Liskeard, Ont., and Amr Hamour of Courtice, Ont. Both players earned two victories in their respective divisions and Hamour was one of only two players to take a game from the champion Mustangs.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Varsity Blues picked up team silver in the women’s draw with a strong Day 2 performance of their own. The Varsity Blues won six matches on the final day and were buoyed by the play of No. 5 Helena Whyte of Toronto, who won all four of her matches during the tournament. The second place finish also earned head coach Dave Cooper the women’s Coach of the Year honour.
The McMaster Marauders won the bronze medal in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The men were led by No. 1 and Rookie of the Year Patrick Morkus of Barrie, Ont. Morkus won three of his four matches in his first appearance at the OUA Championships with his only loss coming to the Mustang’s Chetty.
McMaster’s women were paced by No. 3 Shauna Wentzell of Mississauga, Ont., and No. 5 Melissa Song of North York, Ont., who each won three matches of their own. No. 1 Kristina Taylor of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., earned OUA All-Star status in her eighth appearance at the championships.
The Waterloo Warriors, who finished fifth in the women’s tournament, had two athletes take home major awards at the championships. No. 1 Micaala Seth of Fergus, Ont., was named the women’s Most Valuable Player after going a perfect 3-0 in her division. Sister Natasha Seth of Fergus, Ont., Waterloo’s No. 2, took home the women’s Rookie of the Year honours with three victories of her own. Both players were also named OUA All-Stars following the event.

The first night of the inaugural Jester's University Squash League- West Sectional held at The London Squash Racquets Club was a huge success. The opening ceremony had Jack Fairs (Head Coach of Western) expressing his appreciation to the Canadian Jester's organization for their leadership and support towards creating the Jester's University Squash League. Lindsay Smith represented the Jesters and outlined their organizational objectives. Lindsay praised the Jester's Executive for their quick work and also credited the league commissioners "this league has a very bright future given the involvement of league commissioners Alex Carter, Iain Crozier and Ryan Forster."
The first round of matches had Western over McMaster (6-0) and Waterloo over Brock (6-0). Lindsay Smith and Brett Hill (Western) had a five game thriller with Andrew Silvestri (Western) and Joel Goulding (Western) in a doubles exhibition match. Jester, Clive Porter put on a show hitting nick after nick devastating the dynamic duo of Vinit Kudva (Waterloo) and Andrew Mount (Western).
Play continues Saturday morning starting with McMaster vs. Waterloo.

The University Jester's Squash League East Sectional held at the National Squash Academy was a great day full of exciting squash!
Teams arrived at 9:30am to begin warming up for a long day of squash. The introductions commenced at 10am with league commissioners thanking those participating and discussing their excitement for the year to come. Queens and McGill wrapped up the introductions with enthusiatic cheers...clearly ready to take to the court and compete.
Queens faced McGill in the closest match of the day with McGill winning 4-2. It could have easily been 4-2 in Queen's favour as 2 matches went right down to the wire in the 5th games! What a great way to start off the day!
This was followed by a Jester's team of Ryan Forster, Alex Carter, Scott Stoneburgh and Andrew Guilfoyle taking on some of Jamie Nicholls' talented juniors from the NSA.
Match 2 featured UofT facing off against Queens. The final score of 5-1 Queens was not indicative of the highly contested games with 3 matches going to 4 or 5 games.
The final match of the day featured McGill taking on UofT with McGill taking the match 6-0. Similar to the 2nd match all matches were competitive with 3 matches going to either 4 or 5 games.
We would like to commend all the players for their enthusiasm and exemplifying great sportsmanship, which made the squash highly enjoyable to watch.
A very special thanks to Jamie Nicholls and his NSA team for donating the courts for the day as well as their time in helping making the event a true success!
It was also great to hear the West sectional was a huge success and we look forward to the cross-over events in the New Year
