Squash players from all over the country descended on Charlottetown, PEI, to compete in the 2023 Canada Winter Games, which takes place every four years. The event was held from February 18-25 with the Individuals played from Sunday to Tuesday, while Wednesday through Saturday was the Team Event.
Coaches Robin Clarke and Marci Sier traveled with boys team made up of Jack Jones, Sebastian Singodia, Wasey Maqsood, Daniel Deverill, and the girls team of Maya Askari, Ashley Hall, Ananya Maheshwari and Iman Shaheen. Team Ontario brought home double silver medals in the boys and girls team events, losing out to Team BC in the final round, as well as two bronzes in the individual events, thanks to Iman Shaheen and Daniel Deverill. Our boys team was seeded third going into the event, while the girls team was seeded second.
Our Team Ontario athletes were able to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity, which included an opening ceremony, athletes village and 20 other sports to spectate and engage with. Team member Daniel Deverill was generous enough to share some words regarding his experience at the CWG and how special it was to be a part of Team Ontario.
"The Canada winter games was the best experience that I have ever had throughout my years playing squash. Experiencing the opening ceremonies made me feel very lucky and honoured to be where I was due to the fact that I had the pleasure to be a part of the real deal. It was such an honour to represent team Ontario and walk out into such a passionate atmosphere while wearing red.
It was very special to receive 2 medals at the games and I could not have done it without the support of my teammates and amazing coaches along with the amazing atmosphere that was created from team O. From the first point to the last, everybody had everyone's back and that’s what made us such an amazing team. I made countless memories, made new friends, achieved goals, had tons of laughs, and had an experience of a lifetime.
I could not be more thankful to be a part of the 2023 Canada Winter Games. Truly honoured."
