We are extremely saddened to share news of Sherry Funston, Squash Ontario’s Executive Director from 1981 until 2015, has passed at the age of 77 on December 18 in Scarborough.

Sherry was a long-standing member of the squash community. She first joined the Squash Ontario as an Administrative Assistant in 1976 when the organization was first created and was promoted to the Executive Director position in 1981. She was known to be welcoming and inclusive.

When she completed her Squash Ontario career in 2015, she continued to work with the Ontario Squash Hall of Fame as a member of the Board of Governors and was an integral part of the induction ceremonies in 2017, 2019 and 2022. She remained a selfless organizer and acted as liaison with Squash Ontario, keeping the two groups connected.

Two Executive Directors have served Squash Ontario since 2015 – Jamie Nicholls and myself (Lynsey Yates). Over the past nine years Sherry was always available when we sought advice or needed to share a laugh with someone had been through all the same challenges. She was appreciative and respectful of other people’s time and assistance. She was a friend.

Sherry touched the lives of many in the squash community over the 47 years she devoted to the sport.
