Ontario's Men and Women Bring Home Medals from the Canadian Team Championships

The Canadian Men's and Women's Team Championships took place this past weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick, and Gatineau, Quebec respectively.  Team O started the New Year with a silver and bronze this past weekend at the Canadian Team Championships and will be looking to our Masters squad to complete the spectrum with a Gold this weekend in Edmonton.

Congratulations to Team Captain Albert Shoihet, Ahad Raza and Mohanad Hekal on the Men’s side who rode a thrilling 11-8 in the 5th deciding victory by Hekal in the semifinals vs. Manitoba to advance to a 6th straight final. The team came up short in the championship match against a very strong Quebec team but represented Ontario with pride throughout a great weekend of squash at the new Pan-Am legacy facility in Moncton, NB.

Our Women’s team had a dynamic mix of youth and experience with the in-form #1 Micaala Seth, legendary Marnie Baizley at #2 and top junior and Team O rookie Marlow Benson at #3. The women had an equally dramatic semifinal match with Seth defeating Alberta #1 Jackie Moss 14-12 in the 5th, only to come up just short losing a tough 2-1 team match. The team rebounded nicely to capture the bronze medal with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Manitoba as both Seth and Baizley defeated higher ranked opponents.

Ontario now puts their faith into our deep and talented Masters outfit of Julie Hisey, Elka Markus, Sue Desa, Bruce Marrison, Scott Kemp-Gee, Trent Haase, Wayne Pye and the injured coach and mascot Dave Morrish as they head to Edmonton to take on the nation’s best senior players. Captain’s Bruce Marrison and Elka Markus are confident that Team O is ready to avenge their narrow championship defeat from 2016 and will bring home the Gold. Follow all of the action online here and good luck to our Masters Team!
